With the various invasions, migrations, and conquests that began to occur from around the BC-CE change-over, tensions would have been quite high with England himself as he greatly resented foreign rule, although it had largely made him more unified and spurred the development of new languages and cultures.
For example, the man who unified "England", Alfred the Great, was a Viking. Also considering that the first "English" kings were French, he couldn't have totally resented their rule, but he certainly wouldn't enjoy it entirely.
England would have vowed to not allow anyone to rule him again after France had, and would keep that promise to himself.
Other events of significance in the development of his personality, that I am aware of, include the Crusades, England's various civil wars, and his continued relations with his brothers.
Now, I could go into great detail with any of these events, but in the interest of time and length of the post, I might discuss those later. However, if you are interested, I highly suggest a friend of mine, Kimanda, on DeviantART or Tumblr who does a wonderful job discussing the British Isles and history in general.
